Holy Father receives Hungarian Prime Minister
2004. december 20., hétfő 21:30

On 18th  December John Paul II received Ferenc Gyurcsány, Hungarian Prime Minister in  a private audience.  The Holy Father in his speech reminded the head of the government of the agreement between the Holy See and the prevailing Hungarian government on financing the public service of the Catholic Church. The Pope expressed his hope that the spirit of constructive collaboration will characterise the work of the State and the Church as they progress according to this agreement. After the audience the Prime Minister had a conversation with Secretary of State, Cardinal Angelo Sodano.

After the visit, Ferenc Gyurcsány had  a press conference in Rome, when he mentioned that he stated his views to the Pope and to Angelo Sodano. As he said, the way the Hungarian church took a stand in the question of the dual citizenship [of Hungarians living beyond the borders] is disputable and it is interference in the internal politics. According to him, the unsuccessful referendum is a loss of prestige for the church, and awakens doubt in believers and non-believers as well.

The Hungarian Prime Minister also expressed his doubt to the Vatican about last week’s demonstration for equal subsidy for church schools, where also students were present. He emphasised that the demonstration was on the same day when the Parliament accepted an amendment that means solution to most of the raised problems. He remarked that this is a mistakable role of the church in the politics.

According to Ferenc Gyurcsány, the Pope indicated that he “understood the problem”.

András Veres, Secretary of the Hungarian Bishops’ Conference reacted that the church respects the Prime Minister’s personal opinion regarding the referendum, but the church has its right to represent a different view.

Referring to the demonstration in defence of church schools, András Veres emphasised that the equal subsidy of church and state schools is still not achieved. On the other hand, the right of students to demonstrate with their parents’ permission cannot be questioned in a democratic state.

The secretary of the Hungarian Bishops’ Conference also said that Cardinal Angelo Sodano informed the Hungarian Catholic Church on his conversation with the Hungarian Prime Minister. András Veres hopes that Ferenc Gyurcsány himself will inform the public opinion about that.

The bishop stressed that he is pleased that the Prime Minister knows the documents of the II Vatican Council: “He then surely finds the lines declaring that the church has its opinion on social and public questions and it is supposed to express them, even if it is not liked by those who are in power.”
